3 Essential Oils to Diffuse for Allergies
How to make an “allergy day” a better day
A post by: Bridgette Brenneman
It was a regular morning, but I just couldn’t get my day started. Every task seemed monumental. I was dealing with a motivation crushing combination of allergy symptoms. It may seem like a minor inconvenience, but I was living in an allergy fog. Do you suffer from allergies? Indoor or outdoor; seasonal or year round. Allergy symptoms are a nuisance that can ruin any day. Allergies may cause:
- Sneezing
- Runny nose
- Itchy/watery eyes
- Scratchy throat
- Ear congestion
- Postnasal drainage
When allergy symptoms flare up, it can be miserable. Congestion can often cause sinus headaches, brain fog, and affects the quality of sleep you may get at night. Typical non-drowsy allergy medications don’t always cut it, and Benadryl isn’t always a practical choice if it puts you to sleep. After weeks of struggling with my allergy symptoms, I’d had enough and began looking into ways to gain additional relief.
I started by researching essential oil blends to diffuse in the house for allergy relief. I happened to have 3 of the recommended oils on hand and started diffusing them immediately, these oils are:
- Lavender
- Peppermint
- Lemon
I put about 3 drops of each oil in my diffuser and I run it periodically throughout the day. I also run a diffuser in my bedroom with a setting that runs it on and off throughout the night. Running the diffuser at night improves the quality of sleep I get since this oil blend greatly reduces my congestion, making it easier to breath and relax.
This essential oil blend has been extremely helpful in managing my seasonal allergy symptoms. However I must say that it has not been a replacement for a daily allergy medication. In my struggle with seasonal allergies, the two work in tandem and so far it’s the best way I’ve found to manage my allergies.
This is not a one-size-fits-all type of fix. There are certainly a variety of oil blends that you could try for allergy relief, this one is really just the simplest. Every person is different and may benefit from a different variety of oils, or other methods of finding allergy relief. I encourage you to do your own research and find what works for you.
