Organizing our homes is a losing battle when there is too much stuff. When our homes are overstuffed it doesn’t matter how many organizing tools we buy; it’s a matter of physics, it simply won’t fit. Organizing is made easier when we decide to let go of clutter on a regular basis rather than keep sticking it into closets and cupboards.

Tips on getting clutter free: take a day to work through this list or do one thing from the list every day for a month.

What items are you not truly using? Are there too many of a thing? Too many coffee mugs? Too many T-shirts? Sort through and declutter these items getting rid of items you don’t use.

Decide on a reasonable quantity of an item to keep on hand. Too many cleaning supplies anyone?

Remove all items from your kitchen counters, just temporarily! Place them out of the kitchen; evaluate, and only take back the items that are used frequently. Relocate the infrequently used items to an out of the way spot where they won’t be an eyesore.

Sort your mail and papers as soon as you walk into the house. Create a place for the different types of papers to avoid messy piles.

Check for outdated medications and dispose of them.

Throw out any old unused half-empty bottles of stuff in the bathrooms. Don’t forget to look around the tubs and showers for old bottle clutter.

Set a timer and go through overstuffed drawers. Clean out one a day. Put organizers in the freshly cleaned drawers to encourage new organizing practices.

Take a few minutes to clear clutter from your bedside tables. Give away books you’re done reading. Keep your bedside table items minimal for a more peaceful look at bedtime.

When sorting through your clothes, keep what makes you look good and feel good. Let go of the rest.

Put a box for donations in your laundry room, weeding through outgrown clothes as they come through the laundry.

Lifestyle thought processes are key to living clutter free.

If you look around and still see too much stuff, then start asking yourself some questions about the importance of the things in your home.

What do you want this room or area to look like? What is interfering with that goal?

How do you want to live life in your house? What is in the way of that life?

What is useful and being used? Think carefully if you’re holding onto something because you think it might be useful someday.

If an item isn’t useful, do you like it or love it?

If you are holding onto mementos, consider decorating with them.

Living clutter free requires regular evaluation and pruning. By making this thought process part of our cleaning routines, we’ll keep the clutter from building up and achieve a more organized and restful home.

Try using some of the workbooks in the Free Resource Library to help you learn how to manage your specific home.
